Style

At the end of part 4, Andy Mulligan uses newspaper stories to reveal further information about Senator Zapanta and the mystery. There are about 4 newspapers that are telling a lot of informations to us about the Senator Zapanta and about the police  Some newspaper told us that the vice President is really bad  and mean. One of the newspaper called UNIVERSITY VOICE with the title “Enough is enough, say students.” In the newspaper it says that Behala could still move forward, but it won’t until they’ve said goodbye to bad, greedy old man called Senator Zapanta. The other newspaper named daily star thinks that the Senator Zapanta is a bad. The newspaper said that the Senator Zapanta is the one who spent a lifetime swearing he’s clean. In four of the newspaper, there were alot of bias things about the Senator Zapanta.

Multiple Perspective

In the book called Trash by Andy Mulligan. There are many chapters that are written by different characters in the book like Raphael, Gardo, Rat, Father Juillard and many more. One of the example is on Chapter one. The first chapter is written by the main character named Rapheal. There are many benefits of writing the story from different characters. One of the benefits is that they can show different perspective  of the characters so we know what the character feel. The other benefits is that they can show different perspective of the characters so we know what the character is thinking.

This is a story about........

This is a story about a group of three boys named Raphael, Gardo and Rat who are trying to solve a big mystery about a Vice President stealing money from AID. This story is also about poverty. Poverty means the people who doesn't have any food to eat, money to buy stuff and doesn't have any house to live in.In the beginning it says that two of three characters are trying very hard to stay alive in the dumpsite. One of their other friends is living alone in other part of the dumpsite. This story also about  how to be a good and a loyal friend.  In this story one example is when Raphael told Gardo to take the bible for them and Gardo  do it for them because he wanted his friends to be happy.

Family

In this story, the dump site people are like a whole family in the dump site  Gardo is one of the character that have no family at all. He thinks Raphael is his brother or cousin. The other character that doesn't have mom and dad is Raphael. The only person that he has is Gardo and his aunt  One example that shows that the dump site people are like a whole family is when the police took Raphael to the police station. Gardo and the other dump site people tried to safe Raphael from the police but they could not safe him  because the police are big and strong. So Gardo tried to chase the police car but he wasn't fast enough. I think that is what family means in this story . Family means to help other people that are not the same with you even though their not in your family.

Characters

Rat, Gardo and Raphael are the characters that are almost the same in the book Trash. The similar things about them are they are dump site site boys. The things that are not the same between three of them are Rat is a boy who likes to steal things from the school. Raphael is a boy who always lie to to the police to survive from them. But Gardo is a nice boy who is loyal to his friends and he is very brave. Gardo is not afraid of the police, and he is not afraid to go to the prison.

How to Create Suspense

In the book Trash, Andy Mulligan uses many techniques to create suspense. One technique he uses is to make the reader follow a trail of clues.  An example of this is when Raphael and Gardo found a bag, they don't know what is inside the bag but after they open the bag they found a lot of things inside it such as ID card, two photos of a girl,a wallet and  a key. Another example of this is when they found an ID card. Both of them don't know who's ID card it is. After they research about the guy in the ID card they know who he is. Other example is when they saw a key inside the bag. After they asked Rat what is the key for, Rat said that the key is a locker key  and Rat also said that the locker is in the Central Station. After they went to the station they found a letter which had code in it. But  we still wondering what the code is for.

Furthermore, in Trash, we don’t always know if a character is good or bad.  Examples of this include the police. In the book some of the dumpsite peoples to not trust the police because the police always lied. Another bad thing about the police is the police killed the freedom fighter which is Pascal Aguila, they also tortured Raphael just to know where the bag is. Another character that we don’t know if he is a bad or a good character is Rat also known as Jun-Jun. In the book is says that Rat lied to Raphael and Gardo that he has no money at all. But then he told them that he has a box full of it. Then when he tried to get more money he stole money from the Mission School safe. Another character that we don’t know if he is a good character or not is Zapanta or known as the Senator. In the book it says that Zapanta has stole 30 million dollars from the International AID. He stole the money because he wanted to be the best man in the city. The last character that we don’t know if he’s a good man or not is Jose Angelico. In the book is says that Jose Angelico stole 6 million dollar from The Vice President by using a fridge. Some people thought that he was a bad man but he actually a good man because he stole the money that The Vice President stole from the International AID. He stole the money because of the people inside Behala not for himself.

In addition, Mulligan also creates suspense by having the characters work against a deadline.  If the boys don’t discover the mystery then they are in big trouble because the police are chasing them to get the bag.

Another way that suspense is created is by creating conflict between characters.  Examples of characters in conflict include Rapheal and his auntie. They had conflict about giving the bag to the police or not. His auntie wanted to tell the police that Rapheal had found a bag that the police was trying to find because she wanted money to live but Raphael said that he doesn’t want to give the bag to the police because he knows that the police was lying about giving  money to every family in the dumpsite.

Moreover Mulligan also has different characters telling the story.  He does this because  he wanted to show different perspective of the characters so we know how each character in the book feel.

Is it Ok to lie?

Is it ok to lie?
There is a lot of lies from the three main boy (Rapheal, Gardo and Rat) in the book called trash. For example Rapheal said to the police that he didn't find a bag but he said that he found a shoe he said this because he know that the police will bring him to the prison. Another one is when Rat says that he has no money but then he has a box full of it. Another example from the book is when Gardo said “My grandfather is in prison, ma’am, and I want to go and see him” on page 48 he lied to Sister Olivia because he wanted to talk to Gabriel Olondriz about Jose Angelico. Olivia believed Gardo and went to the prison with Gardo. After they found a letter from the locker the boys lied to father Julliard about using the computer, the boys said that they are going to use it for a quiz on the internet but they use the computer to get more information about Jose Angelico. Another example is when Rapheal was in the Ermita Police Station, he said to the police “I found money. I found 11 hundred pesos, and that’s all” on page 60. He said this because he already know a lot of things about Jose Angelico. Another example from the book is when Rapheal said that the money is for an electricity bill.
Sometimes in the book. The police also lied to the people in Behala. One example in the book the police said “We’re giving good money to anyone who finds it. Another fact is, if anyone here finds it, we’re are going to give a thousand pesos to every family in Behala” on page 11. They say this because they just want the bag and they don’t even care about the family in Behala. The police lie for corruption.
Finally I think sometimes it is ok to lie. The dumpsite boy lie for good purpose. In the internet it says that lie is sometimes ok if it is for a good purpose but the internet also say that we should not lie all the time. The boys lied because they wanted to survive from the police but the police lie for corruption  I think that the boys should not lie because lying can hurt people’s feelings. In my opinion lying is very bad for us.
